VASCO: GOACAN launched its ‘Campaign for Compliance’ on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on Friday, near Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building, Vasco.

The campaign is being launched to ensure that various sections of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production Supply and Distribution) Act (COTPA) are implemented in the State in totality.

The group led by GOACAN Co-ordinator Roland Martins displayed posters and banners and explained to people about the ill effects of smoking.

Speaking to Herald, Martins said though the COTPA Act was passed in 2003 various sections of the Act have not yet been fully complied with in Goa.

“Over the last two years, the District and State Task Force for Tobacco Control deliberated and undertook an action plan of awareness and sensitisation for government officers and heads of educational institutions” added Martins.

“The first phase of the campaign will focus on compliance of Section 4: Ban on smoking in public places, Section 6 (a) Rohibition of sale of tobacco products to and by minors and Section 6 (b) Prohibition of sale of tobacco products within the radius of 100 yards from any educational institutions.”
