PONDA: Stating that he would challenge the notification to defer the elections to the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) in court, three-time councillor Mahadev Khanolkar said the PMC has had a history of being run by administrators.
“The government had appointed administrators to the PMC on three occasions. The PMC had administrator from October 1981 to June 1985, from June 14, 1990 to September 4, 1996 and also from September 6, 2006 to February 6, 2008. The government was forced to conduct elections only after people from Ponda approached the court on two occasions. We agitated in 1985 and the government later decided to conduct the elections,” informed Khanolkar, who is also member of the Ponda Vikas Samiti.
“Going by history, I don’t think the government will conduct elections so soon. The government-appointed administrator is least bothered to address the concerns of the people and the city.” “
