MARGAO: Councillor Ghanashyam Shirodkar on Saturday urged the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to initiate further action against the Sanskar Co-operative Housing Society, who failed to vacate their unsafe building, despite orders from the civic body.
Speaking to Herald, Shirodkar said, “The lives of several occupants cannot be put at risk and the conditions of the building are really unsafe for the occupants.”
“This particular Sanskar Housing Society is situated in my ward. I have been informed that long back the MMC had served notice to the housing society with regard to the dilapidated condition. It is true that the building for occupants is not safe,” he stated. He said, “The MMC should take serious note of the issue and take further initiative to demolish the building.”
“Housing society has failed to vacate the premises despite the order from the Chief Officer, and hence now the MMC should write to District Collector Office,” said the councillor.
According to him if God forbid something happens to the building, not only the occupants but the people living in the close-by houses will have to risk their lives.
Shirodkar said, “I will personally discuss the issue with the Chief Officer and will urge to take further actions. The MMC should take order from the Collector’s Office if required.”
It is pertinent to note that building of Sanskar Co-operative Housing Society is one of the 19 unsafe buildings identified by the MMC.
Recently, the MMC had passed an order to vacate the building, and 30 days time has been given to the occupants. However, the housing society failed to vacate it.
