PANJIM: Continuing its upward rise in COVID positive cases that are being recorded on a daily basis, Goa recorded its highest single-day spike on Saturday with 1,540 positive cases.

In the last six days alone, there have been 8,244 COVID positive cases that have been reported and 110 deaths.
The number of deaths reported on Saturday were 17, taking the total number of COVID related deaths to 993, seven short of 1,000.
As per the mortality bulletin released by the Directorate of Health Service (DHS), of the 17 deaths reported, 10 deaths were reported at South Goa District Hospital and the remaining 7 at Goa Medical College. DHS added that out of the 2 patients, who died within 24 hours, both were symptomatic for three days prior to reporting to the hospital. All of the 17 who passed away on Saturday were men.
There were four deaths from Vasco, a 75-year-old, a 66-year-old, a 68-year-old and a 49-year-old. There was also an 87-year-old from Mormugao. A 49-year-old from Cansaulim also passed away. The youngest to pass away on Saturday was a 31-year-old from Curtorim, while there was also a 38-year-old who passed away, whose residence was not listed. A 65-year-old person who passed away also had no residence listed. From North Goa, a 64-year-old male from Calangute, a 65-year-old from Candolim, a 75-year-old male from Pernem also passed away. There were two people whose residence was listed as Bardez who passed away, a 61-year-old and a 62-year old. There was a 45-year-old from Mapusa too. The remaining two were a 70-year-old from Tiswadi, a 42-year-old from Betki.
DHS stated that the total number of active cases as on Saturday had risen to 12,078. Two health centres have also crossed the 1,000 figure mark regarding the number of active cases in their areas. Topping this list is the Margao Urban Health Centre (UHC) with 1221 cases, followed by the Candolim Primary Health Centre (PHC) with 1042 cases. The Porvorim PHC has 965 cases, the Panjim UHC has 773 cases and the Mapusa UHC has 753 cases.
While 3933 samples were tested in a span of 24 hours, Goa’s COVID positivity rate is 39.16 per cent.
DHS added that 485 people had recovered on Saturday and that the recovery rate stands at 82.61 per cent with 485 people recovering on Saturday.
566 new people have been placed under home isolation while 159 new patients were hospitalised.
