PANJIM: Though the State is reeling under increasing rate of crime, there seems to be some respite with BJP government claiming before the Legislative Assembly that criminal activities along the coastal areas had declined during the last year.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, in his reply tabled in the House, said various measures have been adopted to curb criminal activities.
In 2010, police stations along the coastal belt reported a total of 1009 cases, which escalated to 1129 in 2011 and declined to 1097 last year. Though the acquittal rate is high, the police department has managed to secure double digit convictions.
Crimes such as murder, rape, molestation, prostitution and drug related activities are among several other offences reported along this belt, which is more popular among the domestic and international tourists. Last year saw a major crackdown on prostitution activities in the Calangute area.
“Police patrolling at strategic points and Goa Watch Points is maintained; day and night patrolling, Robin (two wheeler) patrolling, police control room vans and foot patrolling is done and criminal intelligence is collected through sources,” the reply stated.
In the latest move besides other measures, IRB personnel were provided to the Tourism Department for patrolling along all beaches in the State.
