CALANGUTE: Acting on a complaint of the farmers, the Calangute panchayat on Saturday cleared the blockage in a culvert through which water from Motant spring was reaching the fields.
Last week, the farmers complained that the culvert was blocked with silt and that some residents in the vicinity of agricultural land at Naikawaddo near St Alex Church were releasing dirty water polluting the fields. Acting on the complaint, the panchayat cleared the blockage in the culvert.
Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins said that the panchayat took up the initiative to clear the blocked in the culvert for the benefit of the farmers.
“We are working towards solving the problem of the farmers. The ward member Sudesh Mayekar supervised the work of clearing the culvert that was blocked due to which the water blocked. We had carried out a site inspection on Tuesday along with the health officer and warned the people against releasing sewage into the field. It was found that there was an overflow in a kitchen pipe outlet and septic tank. The health officer has given them 15 days’ time to comply with the measures and re-inspection will be carried out to check on the same,” he said.
On June 24, Herald had reported about the written complaint made by the farmers to the panchayat that they were unable to cultivate their fields this monsoon season.
The very next day a site inspection was carried out. The farmers had also demanded that the culvert releasing water from Motant spring into the fields be cleared so they are able to cultivate their fields.
