CUNCOLIM: Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dais has warned the state government that if the proposed Girdolim Railway Bridge work did not start this year then people would be forced to stage the rail roko agitation.
The MLA said, “I will be the first person to sit on the tracks and I am willing to go to jail”.
Dais told Herald that he had submitted a memorandum to the South Western Railway Hubli Zone Officer G M Gupta. Paroda sarpanch Deepak Kharangate and others were present. Gupta told Dias the Railways had accepted the proposal for the bridge construction at Guirdolim and they have informed the Goa Government that it would have to share 50 per cent of the expenditure. If the state government assures to spend 50 per cent then the Railways would start the work.
Dais said he would follow up this matter with the CM. “If the state government failed to go ahead with the railway bridge construction then we will be forced to stage the rail roko agitation”.
Locals of Chandor, Girdolim and Macasana are demanding a railway overbridge or subway at Girdolim railway gate. The bridge will solve the problem of all these three villages. Since there is no railway bridge at Girdolim, commuters including locals, students and teachers are inconvenienced as the railway gate is closed every 30 minutes to allow the railway to pass. Recently, locals under the leadership of Dias had organised a protest march demanding the construction of a bridge.
