A delegation of fisher folk, led by Curchorem Fish Market Association (CFMA) President Navnath Naik, informed Fernandes about the dilapidated and unhygienic condition of the fish market and that even after repeated requests the council had failed to provide a water connection.
“Even the ‘A’ Grade municipalities are not charging a high sopo rate. The vendors are paying more than Rs 28,000 per year. This year, the tax has been increased to Rs 92 per day from Rs 77 last year. We are objecting to the hiked tax till the facilities are improved by the council,” said CFMA member Rajesh Sawant.
After listening to their grievances, Fernandes assured to take up the same at the council meeting scheduled on April 13.
Speaking to the press later, the delegation informed that the vendors had taken a water connection in the name of the association and they were paying the water bill.
“Besides a water connection, the council failed to provide basic facilities like toilets and proper lights. The market remains in darkness at night,” said a vendor.
If the council fails to solve their problems at the next council meeting, the vendors have decided to approach the local MLA, Chief Minister, and DMA.
