Currents prove costly as 3 drift into sea, missing

PANJIM: An extended holiday proved costly for a number of tourists as 14 of them were rescued and three were feared missing in eight separate incidents at Morjim, Baga, Velsao, Calangute and Arambol beaches.

According to reports, five friends from MP were swimming in a non-swim zone at Morjim beach. Despite requests by lifeguards to shift to knee-deep water, they continued at the same location under the influence of alcohol. Suddenly, two youth ventured deeper and were hit by waves as a result they were caught in under water currents. Lifeguards rushed to the spot and brought them safely ashore.
In another incident at Morjim, a group of 10 tourists from Karnataka entered a non-swim zone. Four of them ventured deeper only to be pulled inward by under water currents. Lifeguards rushed to the spot and rescued them.
At Baga, about 100 tourists were swimming in a non-swim zone, when two tourists from Mumbai and Lucknow experienced an inward pull due to rip currents which dragged them further. Lifeguards observed the victims in distress and pulled them to safety.
At Velsao, eight youth were swimming in a non-swim zone. After sometime, four members got caught in a rip current and started drifting seawards. Lifeguards noticed the victims in danger and rushed to their aid. All the victims were rescued.
In another incident, a family from Mumbai was swimming in a non-swim zone at Arambol. However, a female tourist found herself in deep water as she could not touch her feet to the ground. Lifeguards rushed to the spot and rescued the victim.
At Calangute, a 35-year-old tourist from Lucknow was saved from drowning by lifeguards.
At Calangute, two tourists from Bangalore were reported missing. As the missing persons could not be traced, the matter was handed over to the police.
In another incident at Calangute, a 36-year-old tourist from Pune was also reported missing. Efforts were on to locate the missing tourist.
