PONDA: Six members of the Curti-Khandepar panchayat submitted a no confidence motion against Sarpanch Priya Chari barely four months after she took over the post. They cite her refusal to take the panch members into confidence as the reason. The motion will be put to vote on May 4.
The rift in the 11-member panchayat is due to a heated rivalry between the BJP and MGP. Both parties are trying to fill the role of sarpanch by wooing each other’s members to secure a majority. The six members who filed the motion belong to the MGP, while Chari is backed by BJP. The previous sarpanch Deepa Naik was an MGP member.
The locals, meanwhile, expressed anguish over the instability prevailing in the panchayat. They said the sarpanch encouraged it by changing his stand on issues for personal gain.
They also felt that constant change in the panchayat would affect development, but it would not bother political parties as they only wanted to win the next panchayat election and retain their hold over the panchayat.
