MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has written to Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant urging him to take immediate steps to resolve the Sonsodo issue and provide relief to the people around.
In his letter, Reginaldo has said that Sonsoddo garbage dump is creating a nuisance in the entire Curtorim constituency and other surrounding villages and towns like Macasana, Sao Jose de Areal, parts of  Fatorda and Margao.
Reminding the chief minister of the commitments made by the Government, Reginaldo said, “In March 2012, when your predecessor late Manohar Parrikar took over reins of the State government, he had promised that he would resolve the garbage issue within a period of six months. Besides, every important functionary in the State government since then has also been talking of resolving the vexed issue of Sonsoddo garbage dump like getting right technologies. Lately an announcement was made to bring it in par with the state of art garbage treatment plant of Carcora. But Goemkars are sad that all these assurances are only on paper. Nothing whatsoever positive solution has yet been found.”
The MLA said that last year too he had written three letters on the subject: two to Parrikar and one to the Chairman Goa State Pollution Control Board.
Urging the chief minister to find a solution for the Sonsoddo garbage dump, Reginaldo said, “Since you have assumed the office of CM and you are a medical doctor by profession for whom ensuring perfect health of people is the first priority, I request you to please take immediate steps to resolve the pending issue of Sonsoddo garbage dump.  Let us not forget the South West Monsoon will hit the shores of Goa in less than two months and if the problem is left unchecked the overflowing of leachate into water bodies from Sonsoddo will turn to be a major health hazard for entire Curtorim constituency and other surrounding villages and towns like Macasana, Sao Jose de Areal, and parts of Fatorda and Margao.”
