The Dabolim International airport resumed its operation at 5 pm on Wednesday, nearly after 13 hours of runway maintenance work.
“Due to periodical maintenance of the runway, Dabolim Airport was closed from 4 am till 5 pm,” said Navy PRO Commandant M C Joshi.
“The planned preventive maintenance followed close coordination between all the stakeholders at the airport. The Indian Navy and the Military Engineering Services ensured that the work progressed flawlessly,” added Joshi.
“Coordination permitted rescheduling of a few flights well in advance to avoid any inconvenience to the general populace and traveling public,” said Joshi.
“The maintenance work was completed at the scheduled time and normal air-traffic from the airport resumed at 5 pm,” informed Joshi.
He further said that to accommodate higher density operations, the Indian Navy suspended military flying and had special measures in place to accommodate increased aircraft on ground and a few flights parked on the military dispersal alongside their aircraft.
“Dabolim Airport operates in excess of 11,000 scheduled and charter flights. With record arrivals and departures, and the increased operation of heavy aircraft, maintenance of the runway and allied facilities will require to be undertaken at regular intervals and periodic planned maintenance would provide for the safety as air traffic into Goa continues to increase,” said Joshi.
