Dairy to hike cow milk purchase price by Rs 2; not to pass burden on consumers

PONDA: There is good news for farmers supplying milk to Goa Dairy: The board of directors (BoD), at its meeting on Tuesday, has decided to hike, subject to quality, the purchase price of cow milk by Rs 2 per litre from August 1. However, the consumers need not worry that the retail price of milk too would be hiked, as the BoD has decided not to pass the burden on them. According to sources, the financial burden of hiking the cow milk purchase price by Rs 2 on Goa Dairy is Rs 40 lakh per month.
To offset the burden, the Goa Dairy has decided increase its production and sale.
The hike in purchase price of milk is expected to benefit 12,000 dairy farmers, who are currently paid Rs 26.14 per litre.  A month ago the BoD had hiked price of buffalo milk, following which the cow milk supplying farmers demanded a hike.
It may be recalled that, recently, two farmers had launched a fast unto death agitation for hike in cow milk purchase price in front of Goa Dairy Premises. The agitation was supported by rest of the dairy farmers. The agitation was withdrawn after the Goa Dairy chairman assured to look into their demands.
