MARGAO: The Parrikar government might find itself in a tight corner over the utilization of land admeasuring 1.15 lakh sq mts in Davorlim acquired by the previous government with local villagers demanding that the same be utilized for projects beneficial to locals.

This became evident on Sunday when the Davorlim gram sabha adopted a resolution demanding reservation of 10,000 sq mts of the acquired land for the Holy Cross Chapel.

That’s not all! Sarpanch Herculano Niasso told Herald that the villagers have demanded a sports complex on the acquired land, besides an old-age home. “These were the three resolutions adopted at the gram sabha. The villagers have demanded a sports complex and an old-age home on the acquired land,” he said.

The Digambar Kamat government had bulldozed its way and acquired land admeasuring 1.15 lakh sq mts for public utility projects in Davorlim despite stiff opposition from the villagers.

As reported earlier by Herald, the office of the District Collector, South has received applications from 11 different institutions and trust for allocation of the acquired land to set up their institutes.

What’s interesting to note is that all these applications, including one received from a Mumbai-based institute, have come to the Collector’s office despite the fact that the government has till date not invited any applications from the public for allotment of the acquired land.

Villagers maintained that since the previous Congress government had acquired the land against the wishes of the people, the present government should reserve and utilize the land for the benefit of the local community.
