MAPUSA: In a daring daylight robbery in the heart of Mapusa, thieves posing as bank customers decamped with cash of Rs 10 lakh from Bank of India, Mapusa branch. Bank officials were clueless about the robbery, while the security guard was taken for interrogation by the police. A Mapusa police team headed by PI Tushar Vernekar is working overtime to nab the culprits with the help of CCTV footage, which shows a man walking away with a bag containing the cash.
According to police, around 11 unknown persons – all posing as customers – entered the bank at around 10.15 am. While some of them kept the bank officials engrossed, one thief entered the cashier’s cabin and grabbed the bag containing the cash. The lady cashier had left her cabin shortly before.
Two of the ‘customers’ were keeping an eye out for the police from outside the bank premises. The thieves were so swift and adept that nobody knew what was happening inside and outside the building. The robbery came to light only when the cashier returned to her cabin. The bank manager Motilal Singh later lodged a complaint with the Mapusa police, who rushed to the bank premises.
PI Tushar Vernekar and his team carried out the formalities, while top police officials, including SP Umesh Gaonkar, visited the bank and took stock of the situation. The police team was busy in the premises for most of the day, due to which bank services were affected. Customers had to leave disappointed after seeing the police there.
