PANJIM: The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) and the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) will meet on May 29 to decide the future course of action as Governor Dr Mridula Sinha has not invited them to form the government despite it being the single largest party.
The seven-day deadline given to the Governor to recall the BJP-led coalition government and invite Congress to form the next government ended on Thursday. After some drama, Congress appears to have softened its stand on government formation.
“The CLP and PCC will be meeting on Tuesday, next week, to discuss the future course of action. We are not going to give up. We are still the single largest party with 16 MLAs and should be given an opportunity to prove our majority on the Floor of the House,” CLP chief Chandrakant Kavalekar said.
Congress MLAs had on May 18 called on the Governor urging her to rectify the mistake committed on March 12, 2017, allowing BJP, which was the second largest party, and its allies to form government. The move came following the Karnataka Governor calling BJP to form the government for being the single largest party with 104 seats despite failing to have the majority.
On Wednesday, Speaking to Herald, All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and Goa desk in-charge Dr Chellakumar had said that decision cannot be taken in hurry as there is already a government in place. “Something is going to happen for sure, if not immediately but soon,” Chellakumar had said.
