PORVORIM: Having celebrated his 22nd birthday on March 17, Patrick Mendes of Pomburpa was proceeding to Mumbai two days later for a fresh assignment on a fledgling shipping career, while his sister, Antonesia, had accompanied him to fulfill a vow (Angvon) at the Mahim Church, when fate willed otherwise.
While Patrick lost his life, Antonesia (25) was seriously hurt in the bus mishap at Khed-Maharashtra on Tuesday.
The body of Patrick has been brought to the State and has been preserved in the morgue of District Hospital, Mapusa, while Antonesia has been admitted to GMC Hospital at Bambolim.
Patrick had recently started his career on a ship and had joined a shipping company eight months ago. During his fist assignment, he had gone to Australia and had come down to Goa in November 2012.
Patrick was called to Mumbai by his company to advise him about his next assignment. Antonesia, who had accompanied her brother as she had to fulfill a pledge (Angvon) at the Mahim Church, is employed in a firm at Donapaula.
Speaking to Herald, an inconsolable mother, Arol, informed that she had phoned her daughter at about 8.30 am on Tuesday.
“My distraught daughter told me that their bus had met with an accident and that she has been injured, but Patrick was not traceable,” said the mother.
Patrick and Antonesia had lost their father when they were young. Their youngest brother is working as an apprentice in a firm.
Neighbours informed that Patrick was a nice person and had taken active interest in all the activities in the village.
