PANJIM: A youth from Khamamol-Curchorem sent ominous text messages to friends and even uploaded photos of his bloodstained hands on Facebook, before ending his life by jumping off the Zuari Bridge late Friday evening.
According to Agassaim Police, Hemant Gawande (26), who had recently returned from abroad, was riding a scooter (GA-09-J-5587), when he stopped the two-wheeler at the Zuari Bridge and alighted from the vehicle some time at about 7.30 pm.
He then inflicted wounds on hands and clicked photos of his bloodstained hands on his mobile phone, before uploading them on his Facebook account, police said.
Gawande then removed his slippers, placed them on the scooter and went along the protection wall of the bridge.Onlookers noticed Gawande proceeding towards the edge of the bridge and tried to persuade him to return to the scooter, besides alerting the police. A police team rushed towards the site and saw him on top of the protection wall.
The police pleaded with him to avoid taking any drastic step, but before they could reach him, Gawande jumped off the bridge and plunged into the river.
Agassaim Police then notified the Marine Police about the incident. A police team went towards the location and after a search, recovered the body at about 9.30 pm. The body was later sent for an autopsy at the GMC hospital.
Police found cuts on the hands of the deceased, while bloodstains were also found on the scooter. The wallet, two mobile phones, driving licence and a wristwatch were also recovered from the clothes of the deceased.
Police said Gawande had earlier sent text messages to friends stating that Friday would be his last day. He had also posted photos of his injured hands on his Facebook account, minutes before he had jumped off the bridge.
Incidentally, friends were alarmed on receiving his messages and had tried desperately to contact him. Gawande, however, gave them evasive replies and told some friends that he was at Colva, while informing other friends that he was at Cortalim.
On hearing the news of his death, friends rushed to the Agassaim police station and identified the body. Agassaim PI Shivram Vaingankar is investigating the case.
