After more than 14 months of announcing to reconstruct the small crossing, the work on the box culvert bridge over the St. Inez Creek on the 18th June Road, close to Caculo Island, has finally commenced.
The Laxmikant Parsekar government, in January 2016, had announced to demolish the existing bridge and reconstruct the bridge.
Towards the end of the year on December 19, 2016, the present Chief Minister and then Raksha Mantri of the country Manohar Parrikar laid the foundation stone to carry out the work.
Given the dilapidated condition of the box culvert bridge, it was announced to be a priority for the capital city and the project was estimated to cost around Rs 1.91 crore. However, the work has commenced during the last week of March this year.
Panjim MLA Sidharth Kuncalienkar, in the defence of the government, has said that the bridge work, which was the need of the capital city, has commenced. He said “It is more than four or five decades the old bridge was built with concrete and it was in a dilapidated condition. Therefore, under GSIDC we have undertaken the reconstruction of the bridge. We will give the city an esthetically designed bridge. In addition beneath runs the St. Inez creek in which we will provide a navigational channel for the creek. However, we will have to suffer for about 8 months but I’m sure once completed it will be worth the wait and the suffering.”
