MARGAO: After the notice served by the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights pertaining to private vehicles carrying students more than its capacity, the Transport Department started looking at the problem carefully in order to come out with the right solution.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho assured that his department is already dealing with the problem.
It is pertinent to note that after taking a suo motu case based on media reports, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) has sought a report from the Transport Department, Education Department and traffic cell on school buses and few private vehicles carrying students more than its capacity in violation of rules. GSCPCR Chairperson Peter Borges issued an order to this effect and has sought a report by June 26.
“After the havoc of Covid pandemic several private sectors and even the owners of the private buses, who were already in the service, are not ready to continue with their service. Kadamba Transport Corporation has tried their best to bring a maximum number of buses on the road, but KTCL doesn’t have the buses to provide more service”, said Mauvin when questioned by the media persons.
He also admitted that the KTCL doesn’t have the funds to add more buses on the roads.
“I am looking at the issue very seriously, as the Transport Department has already received notice in this regard. The department will certainly do the best thing that can be done to resolve the issue”, the minister assured.
In the notice issued by the GSCPCR it has been asked to examine vehicles illegally operating as school buses and implementation of children safety.
Many have raised serious questions with regard to children being transported to schools in a very hazardous manner which can lead to suffocation of the children.
