MARGAO: The desecration of the St Joseph Chapel at Banda-Assolna drew sharp reactions from the parish priest as well as elected representatives as the incident came in for condemnation from all quarters.
Assolna Parish Priest and Episcopal Vicar, South Fr Lucio Dias said it appears there’s somebody playing with the sentiments of the Catholics. “These people have started targeting different religious places of late. I would say the government should be awake to see what’s happening around when attempts are being made to hurt religious sentiments and put a stop to it as early as possible,” Fr Lucio said.
Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva said that the incident shows that attempts are being made to disturb the communal harmony amongst peace-loving people of Goa.
A local resident of Banda Reena Almeida said it was shocking to know that the Chapel was targeted by miscreants. “We do not know whether this is vandalism or a work of a fanatic. It is our right to know who is involved. It is imperative that the police should be on guard now. We would appreciate if the police take action,” she said.
Assolna Sarpanch Framila Almeida expressed her shock over the incident and felt the police should bring the culprits to book.
Deputy Sarpanch Savio Fereira said the incident is a clear attempt to divide the society. “Some years back these people were targeting temples and now chapels. I believe this is not a political issue, but an issue created by a sect of people who are bound to foment trouble,”
he said.
