The Goan traditional hawkers on Tuesday erected stalls near the Pimpalkatta area of the city to sell Holi items despite a ban imposed by the Margao Municipal Council.
When the traditional hawkers set up their stalls near the Bank of Baroda, they were questioned by the Margao Municipal workers, who told them to remove their stalls.
However, the hawkers along with their legal counsel Adv Anacleto Viegas and Jayesh Naik called on the Market Inspector Anil Shirodkar and demanded to know why the Civic body is hell bent in causing harassment to the traditional Goan hawkers.
They pointed out that illegal vendors and outsiders are making hay in Margao and sought to know why the Civic body is doing injustice to the Goans.
Shirodkar, however, sought to wash his hands off by saying that he is only acting as per the instructions of the Civic officials.
It is learnt that the Civic body later decided not to crack a whip as the hawkers maintained that they will wind up their business on Wednesday noon after the Holi celebrations.
The Margao Municipal Council had banned hawking at the Pimpalkatta area following objections raised by the New Market Traders Association on business activity in the area.
The decision has been questioned by the cross section of the society, who even demanded to know whether the Council is run by the market traders.
