Despite measures, Cortalim traffic snarls continue

VASCO: The traffic jams at Cortalim junction continue unabated even though measures have been introduced such as stationing of a team of Road Transport Officers (RTO) on the congested stretches of the national highway.  They have been placed as a support system to the traffic police, who monitor the area regularly.
The mud road from Cortalim junction towards Zuari Bridge has been cordoned off, with only two-wheelers allowed. Traffic police pointed out that this has been done due to the narrow width of Zuari Bridge.
While this has eased the bottleneck that would occur at the spot where the mud road and the cemented road would meet, the latter has been over burdened and witnesses heavy traffic during peak hours.  The cemented road gets traffic from Vasco, Margao and Loutolim side.
Traffic officials pointed out that ultimately the width of the roads and bridge will remain the same irrespective of the number of traffic police stationed at the junction, and opined that the reason behind the traffic junction is because of the number of vehicles plying on the road, which he added has increased of late.
On Sunday evening, vehicles were stuck for hours and the traffic movement was slow.
On Monday, at another stretch of the Panjim- Margao highway from Bambolim- Siridao, there was a massive traffic jam, which delayed traffic on both sides for hours.  Vehicles moving towards Margao/Vasco were delayed even further. Sources stated that an accident on the road caused the long delay.
