PERNEM: Dhargalim villagers joined hands in large numbers on Friday and stopped the ongoing construction of a concrete mixing plant here.
Locals claimed that the project would be a health hazard as it was located in a residential area.
Villagers pointed out that even though the project is located on private land, it will pollute the whole vicinity and questioned the Goa State Pollution Control Board for issuing permissions for such hazardous projects.
“We will not allow any project which pollutes the village and resolutions were even passed at the gram sabha opposing such plants. This plant is located right in the middle of the residential area and will be major health hazard once it starts operating,” villagers said.
Former sarpanch Bhushan Naik informed that during the tenure of the last panchayat body, they had received an application for an NOC. However, it was rejected but later when the Model Code of Conduct was enforced, the applicant approached the Directorate of Panchayat and managed to get an NOC and started the construction work.
“We have already revoked the NOC and will not allow this project in the village,” said Dhargalim Sarpanch Aniket Salgaonkar.
