MARGAO: Chairman of the district Disaster Management Authority Venancio Furtado has convened an urgent meeting with Water Resources department officials to find both short term and long term measures to check soil erosion at Baina, Cananguinim and Khola coast.
Venancio inspected the affected areas of Cananguinim and Nuem in Khola village on Tuesday evening after Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado and Quepem MLA Babu Kavlekar inspected the affected areas earlier in the day.
Taking serious cognisance of the havoc wrought by nature at Nuem in Khola which has left damaged the retaining wall, Avertano promised the Quepem MLA and the local residents that he would direct the district Collector to conduct a site inspection of the affected areas. We could see the damage caused to the area by soil erosion. I will ask the district collector to take up both short and long term measures to contain the damage”, Avertano told the media.
After inspection of the affected areas, Venancio said a meeting with senior WRD officials will be convened immediately to take up works to arrest further damage to the coast line. “The situation is Baina and Cananguinim and Nuem are different. We have used sand bags to check soil erosion. In Cananguinim and Nuem-Khola, we may required a different strategy to contain further damage to the coast and the retaining wall”, he said, adding that the district administration will go by the expert advice from the WRD officials.
