MAYEM: Deputy Chairperson of Goa Infrastructure and Development Corporation and Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant has assured to rebuild the old building at Sanquelim market area and beautify the surrounding area.

He was speaking to reporters during a meeting which was convened in his office on Monday after officials from Goa Archives and Archaeology Department visited the area where the old building exists.

“I will rebuild the old building at Sanquelim market area and beautify the surrounding area, thereby opening an Ummid entertainment centre for senior citizens, library and a museum along with open hall and a garden with seating arrangements, making the area second tourism spot after the Arvalem waterfall,” said Dr Sawant.

Dr Sawant in his election manifesto had assured the villagers to develop the area by beautifying it and accordingly invited officials from the Goa Archaeological Department to make a study about the place.

The officials inspected the area and later held a meeting at the MLA’s office. The officials told Dr Sawant that the building was constructed about 250 years ago by the Portuguese rulers to collect toll on goods imported from Belgaum via Jamboti to Goa.

After listening to the officials, Dr Sawant informed about his plans to rebuild the old structure and to beatify the area by constructing a open hall surrounded with garden and by reserving separate rooms for a library, a Ummid entertainment center for senior citizens and a museum, for which he requested the Archaeological Department to support the funding.

Dr Sawant also promised to retain the structure once it is reconstructed and beautified and a rough estimate of about Rs 1 crore is expected for the purpose.

Members of BJP Sanquelim city mandal Upendra Karpe, Dattaram Chimulkar and Shivanand Padnekar were present on the occasion.
