MAPUSA: The police have been directed by their senior officials to conduct surprise raids and hold drives at the backdrop of rising drug menace and road mishaps.
The Colvale police led by PI Somnath Mahajik held a drive against drugs and traffic from 9 am till 2 pm and checked 160 vehicles thoroughly. The police took stern action against the two-wheeler riders who were riding vehicles without wearing helmets. The police also penalised parents of minors who were found riding two-wheelers without valid licences.
The people were taken aback to see police suddenly raiding and inspecting in the village but they were told that police are acting to keep the law and order in place.
Police Constable Sajo Desai and Sulesh Naik under the guidance of PSI Sushant Sangodkar were inspecting vehicles at Colvale checkpost. The police said that the drives would be an everyday affair henceforth.
