Driving under the influence major cause of road mishaps: Police

PORVORIM: Traffic Police Inspector of Calangute Police station, Salim Sheikh, stated that driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol is one of the major causes of road accidents.

Delivering a lecture on traffic rules and road safety measures to the students of District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) at Porvorim, Sheikh said 4,229 accidents have been reported in the State during the year 2014, out of which 283 were fatal.
“In all, 290 persons were killed in the accidents, out of which 189 were motorcyclists.  The Traffic Department has booked 3,15,229 cases and collected fines of Rs 3,83,79,780. About 93.35 per cent cases have occurred due to rash and negligent driving. Two wheelers account for 42.95 per cent of the accidents, followed by cars (35.97%) Driving under influence of alcohol is one of the major causes of road accidents,” he said.
“If the vehicle owner follows basic rules and mandatory and cautionary signs, then the rate of accidents will surely be reduced. The Police Department has already written a letter to the Directorate of Education to make a lecture per week on traffic rules and road safety aspects mandatory in schools, but the Directorate of Education does not appear to be serious about this issue,” said Sheikh.
District Institute of Education and Training Vice Principal Devidas Kudav advised the students to follow traffic rules and road safety measures and behave like ideal citizens.
