VASCO: Officials of Water Resources Department Gogol-Margao along with Mormugao Deputy Collector Gaurish Shankwalkar and Mormugao Mamlatdar Laximikant Desai on Thursday inspected the soil erosion at Baina beach.
WRD assistant engineer Franklyn D’Souza and junior engineer Rameshwar Sawant took stock of the soil erosion caused due to high waves.
About five coconut trees were washed away in the sea and people residing in the illegal huts had placed sand-filled sacks and a fishing net near their homes to avoid further soil erosion.
Speaking to Herald, WRD assistant engineer Franklyn D’Souza stated that as a part of disaster management, they will dump some concrete blocks to avoid further soil erosion and protect the houses.
When asked what action the WRD would initiate against the huts constructed within the high tide zone, Mormugao Deputy Collector Shankwalkar said: “Our first priority is to stop further soil erosion and save the huts. Necessary action will be initiated after the monsoon.”
Deputy Collector Shankwalkar on Wednesday served notices to about 35 huts to vacate from the area and to move to some safer places to avoid any untoward situation.
