DyCM moots satellite city for State

PANJIM: Setting up a satellite city in Goa is the best option for Goa, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza said at the inauguration of the fourth International Architecture Forum organised by the Indian Institute of Architects, Goa chapter, in collaboration with CIALP, Friday.

“When it comes to planning a city, the best option for Goa is a satellite city since further development is not possible and starting a satellite city will help start afresh with fresh infrastructure. Planning a new one is better than developing,” he said.
Calling for thoroughly discussing the idea, the minister also acknowledged Portuguese influence on Goa’s architecture, calling it unique to the State.
“Goa is different from the rest of India thanks to what the Portuguese left for us. From the architecture to the culture and dance, it’s been a long association that should continue,” D’Souza said.
The forum that brings together the IIA as well as architects from Portuguese speaking countries have gathered for a two-day conference to discuss smart cities and development without causing damage to the environment.
D’Souza also pointed to the fact that the State could not imitate a city like Mumbai, calling it rampant growth in all directions, “something Goa doesn’t need.” He said that though Goa had the best green cover, the pressure was not on to promote red industries and focus on green industries.
