The Election Commission of India has expressed skepticism over recent practices by few candidates who secretly infringe the ‘upper spending ceiling’ of the expenditure limits during election, an ECI official said.
“The Election Commission is concerned that there should not be unaccountable expenditure. The deliberations will also be made on how candidates should not be allowed to break the election expenditure clandestinely,” ECI Director General Akshay Raut said at a press briefing on Sunday.
He further said that the zonal conference of Chief Electoral Officers of eleven states and Union territories on August 31 in Panjim will review the above situation, which will be presided over by Chief Election Commissioner of India Dr S Y Qureshi and ECI V S Sampat.
The conference will interestingly also highlight the concern on the trend of paid news/reports during elections. The DG said that ECI is set to keep a watch over such illegalities, as well. “Media and political parties play significant role in the fair election practices. CEOs have to do their best to deal with the problem and hence they are already issued assets of guidelines on June 8,” he added.
Raut said that ECI is committed to have perfect electoral rolls and it will ensure that every individual above the age of 18 years are on the voters list to participate in the election process. The ECI team will host a diamond jubilee photo exhibition on Monday.
