PANJIM: Former Union Minister of State Eduardo Faleiro has demanded that a gallery of portraits of Goa’s freedom fighters be established in the State Legislative Assembly as a mark of respect to those who lost their lives for Goa’s freedom from Portuguese rule.
Addressing media persons on Friday, Faleiro said there are several freedom fighters like Dr T B Cunha, Ram Manohar Lohia, Juliao Menezes, Purshottam Kakodkar, who sacrificed for Goa’s freedom.
“As a mark of respect to these great leaders, I demand before the Speaker of the State Assembly to display a gallery of portraits of these freedom fighters in the Assembly hall,” he said.
The Congress leader recalled that in 2011, on his demand, a portrait of Dr T B Cunha was unveiled in the Central Hall of Parliament on December 19, during celebrations of 50 years of Goa’s liberation from Portuguese colonial rule.
“The Central hall of Parliament also consists of a gallery with photos of leaders who gave India independence,” he said.
Faleiro said it is important that the memory and teachings of the leaders of the freedom movement inspire people and future generations. He said a similar request had been made to the Speaker in 2011, however, no steps have been taken on this till now.
