PORVORIM: Goa government has a major challenge not only to collect garbage but also of educating people to bring segregated waste to the treatment plant, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo told the Legislative Assembly on Friday.
“It is a big challenge before us. How are we going to collect the garbage and how to educate people to bring the waste to the treatment plant? We see the wastes are dumped on the beaches and fields. This later goes into rivers polluting the water and environment,” he said.
The BJP legislator also pointed out lack of coordination among the panchayats to solve the menace also as there is no house to house collection of waste in the coastal area. “People dump dead animals like cats in a poly bag… there is no segregation of waste,” he complained seeking systematic collection and treatment of different types of waste.
He went on suggest that garbage collection stations would solve the problem to a larger extend as segregated waste would be transported to the plant for treatment.
Meanwhile, on another issue BJP MLA Nilesh Cabral came down heavily on the opposition for misleading the Goans over coconut tree issue. He was reacting to Congress’ Aleixo Reginald Lourenco who demanded that government should come out clean on the declassification on coconut tree under the recent amendment to the Act.
“When I utter the word ‘grass’, there is a chaos. Government should come out clean on this,” he demanded with Cabral stating that even after the amendment, one needs permission from concerned authorities to cut a coconut tree.
