MARGAO, MAY 10
Edwin (Cipru) Cardozo has won the Navelim Zilla Panchayat seat by defeating his nearest rival by a margin of 2090 votes.
While Edwin polled 3151 votes, his close rival Wilson Viegas garnered 1061 votes. The remaining three candidates in the fray polled less than 1000 votes. While Succorro Fernandes polled 483 votes, Agnelo Da Costa got 159 votes. Casmiro Vierra polled 89 votes. A total of 81 votes were declared invalid and rejected.
Edwin’s victory triggered jubilations in his camp and the winning candidate attributed his victory to the support from the youth and backing of the Navelim MLA and PWD Minister Churchill Alemao and the Congress block and other supporters.
Replying to a question, Edwin said he had declined to withdraw from the fray as the youth had rallied behind him and had extended their wholehearted support to his candidature.
The Navelim MLA and his brother Joaquim had tried to persuade me to withdraw in favour of Bishuth Themudo, but my youth supporters told me to contest”, he said.
Replying to another question, he said he has not yet planned the development projects in his constituency, but will get down to business and usher in the development with the support of everyone and by taking everyone into confidence.
