Elderly man falls in Zuari, stays afloat an entire night

VASCO: This is straight from a ‘believe it or not’ book.

An elderly person who fell in the Zuari river from the Zuari Bridge on Sunday evening was rescued on Monday afternoon by a fisherman from Sancoale and taken home by his family.
Sanchit Naik, who rescued Cansaulim-Arrossim resident Remidios Sebastino Miranda (71), who allegedly slipped and fell from Zuari bridge said, “The victim told me that he fell from the bridge at around 6 pm on Sunday. This went unnoticed by passersby and thus he remained in the water the entire night floating along with the low tide and reached near the old church at Sancoale.”
“On Monday afternoon I noticed him in the water and found him totally exhausted. He had come out from deep waters to safe waters but was unable to walk, thus with the help of a friend I brought him out of the water and later handed him over to the Verna police,” Naik added.
Verna police confirmed having received a complaint from Miranda’s family members on Monday morning after which they registered the case of a missing person. “While we were investigating the case we received a call from one Sanchit Naik where he claimed to have rescued one elderly person who was swimming for whole night to avoid drowning. We went to the site and found that the information was true and the person rescued had a similar identity to that of the missing person. We therefore called the family members to the site and they took him,” Verna police told Herald.
