Election to Goa’s lone Rajya Sabha seat on July 24

PANJIM: The Goa Legislature Secretariat on Thursday issued a notification regarding election for the lone Rajya Sabha seat, scheduled on July 24.  The tenure of sitting MP Vinay Tendulkar ends on July 31. 

Secretary (Legislature) Namrata Ulman, who is the returning officer for the election has issued the notification. 

The last date for filing nominations is July 13, while, scrutiny of nominations will be held on July 14 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 17.  

The election if required will be held in the VIP Block, Goa Assembly Complex, Porvorim from 9 am to 4 pm on July 24. The counting of votes will also be held same day.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) last week had announced the schedule for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat, West Bengal and Goa.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has decided in-principle to contest Rajya Sabha poll in the State. The party’s Political Advisory Committee took the decision to field candidate for the lone seat and to seek support from other opposition members.

The decision will be conveyed to the high command and final decision will be taken in next few days, says Congress. Congress will seek support from like-minded parties in the election and Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao will talk to other opposition parties for their support, said GPCC senior vice president M K Shaikh. 

Shaikh said that the Congress party is gearing up for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. A meeting of block Congress committee presidents was held in the presence of AICC Goa desk in-charge Manickam Tagore, who reviewed the work allocated to block presidents to prepare the party organisation for Lok Sabha elections. Tagore also held deliberations with GPCC executive members.
