However, the PWD is in the process of rehabilitating the encroachers after which the pending 975 meters long stretch pipeline would be completed and Mormugao taluka would, then, receive 24 hours water supply, informed PWD minister Sudin Dhavlikar on the sidelines of a function held at Headland Sada.
“I know that only 68 to 75 MLD of treated water is supplied to Mormugao from Sealaulim. Even though our treatment capacity at Selaulim has increased to another 100 MLD, the pipeline which currently supplies water to Mormugao is in a dilapidated condition. Thus, the moment we increase the pressure on this pipeline to supply more water to Mormugao, the existing pipeline gets burst. To overcome this issue, we had started laying 1000-mm diameter pipeline from Verna to Mormugao. However, except for 975 meter length, the work on this new pipeline has been completed. We have already started the process to rehabilitate the encroachers over the pipeline at Dabolim and I am sure that after two months, the PWD will be in a position supply 24 hours water to the people of Mormugao taluka,” he said.
“As per the Central norms applicable all over India, every person living in rural areas should get 65 litres of water per day, and in urban areas the norms is to supply 130 litres per day per person. However, in Goa, PWD supplies more than 130 litres in rural areas and about 200 litres in urban areas. That too we supply filtered water to the taps which makes Goa as the only state to supply so much of water to its residents in whole country,” he pointed out.
Commenting on the pending work of new sewage plant at Katem Baina, Dhavlikar said, “My priority is that all the infrastructure related work which was undertaken by the PWD in Mormugao should be completed in the next two months. Similarly, I will ensure that even the sewerage treatment plant is completed in two months.”
Power Minister Milind Naik said, “Sada was once known for water scarcity with people complaining of water crises almost every month. However, with few initiatives the supply was normalised and after the inauguration of the new reservoirs, Sada will have reserve water that can last for three days even during the restricted supply from Selaulim.”
