Goa lacks entrepreneurship mindset because of which we find youth asking for jobs here rather than setting up their own venture, an industrial expert said here today.
“In Goa if you ask young minds they will immediately reply saying that they prefer to do job rather than creating jobs,” Dr Dinesh Awasthi director of Ahmedabad-based Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI), told reporters.
Addressing media, Dr Awasthi said that “private companies do not offer much employment opportunities nor can we depend on government, asking them to produce jobs. Hence, the unemployment is on rise,” he added.
The director feels that one entrepreneur alone has a capacity to create 20-30 odd jobs at a time. “2,000 entrepreneurs in Goa can create 50,000 jobs if they are properly trained,” Dr Awasthi stated.
Dr Awasthi is in Goa to promote about EDI’s educational course on Post Graduate Diploma in Management- Development Sector and Social Entrepreneurship, which is been recognized by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
“Today, given adequate training and support, entrepreneurship is no more a field where the fear of failure lurks. With the right decision and careful investment, an entrepreneur can be sure to succeed,” the director said.
Dr Awasthi said that for entrepreneurs, the scenario today is inviting. “Our economic policies and banking system are favourable to entrepreneurship,” he said adding that better infrastructure, easy funding, access to resources have structured a conducive environment for the entrepreneurs to flourish.
However, Dr Awasthi criticized saying that the traditional curricula in our school/colleges are largely designed to fit into the societal norms, where students are not encouraged to develop a sense of enterprise.
“The conventional educational system does not produce individuals who set out on their own and face challenges. It creates ‘job seekers and no job creators’,” he alleged.
He added saying that besides developing entrepreneurial awareness and motivation it is crucial to inculcate flexible, adaptable entrepreneurial traits in youth.
“If our educational system is geared towards these objectives, it help in the functional development so that the youth may set up their own businesses to not only earn their living but living for others,” he stated.
EDI, an autonomous institute was set up in 1983 by apex financial institutions like IDBI, ICICI, IFCI and SBI. The institute has till date set up 14 centers across India right from Jammu and Kashmir to Chennai.
Apart from that, with the help of Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, EDI has been set up in countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and is presently working on establishing centers at Uzbekistan and Kazakhistan.
