PANJIM: The State government has invoked Goa Essential Service Maintenance Act and prohibited strikes in the wake of the two-day strike notice issued by employees of the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) and River and Navigation Department (RND).

The employees had given notice to strike work on February 20 and 21, as a part of  the countrywide general strike call given by the National Convention of Workers (NCW) to protest the economic policies of the United Progressive Alliance  (UPA) government at the Centre and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Goa.

The government has banned strikes in all units/sections of the RND and transport services. Director of Transport Arun Desai said that the notice is being issued following the strike call given by the employees, which would paralyze the public transport system.

The department has also issued a notice warning that participation in the stir in any form of transport services involved in transporting passengers or goods by land or water in the state is illegal and serious action “as deem(ed) fit shall be taken against all defaulters.”
