Ex-gratia scheme discontinued, seamen shocked

Association meeting on July 4

MARGAO: The Goan seamen were left shell-shocked with the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund Society, Mumbai informing them via letters that the ex-gratia scheme has been discontinued from July 1, 2018.
The Goan Seamen Association of India has called for a meeting of all seafarers and widows on July 4 to discuss the issue.
Association spokesman Dixon Vaz informed that the news has caused panic and stress amongst thousands of retired seamen and widows in Goa as the letters were sent without any prior intimation.
The Goan Seamen Association of India has totally rejected the decision and has vowed not allow such decision to take effect without taking the seafarers into confidence.
“We will discuss the issue with the seafarers on July 4 and chalk out the future course of action, said Vaz.
