PANJIM: Dakshinayan Abhiyan on Thursday, in a planned demonstration, extended support to the ongoing struggle of the student’s community in Delhi University (DU) who are fighting for their fundamental right of freedom of expression.
The decision to support the student’s movement, which gained nationwide support after Gurmehar Kaur openly supported the students’ right of expression, was taken at a recent core committee meeting of the Abhiyan attended by former student union leaders.
Speaking to the media, Prashant Naik, a former student union leader said, “There is no freedom of expression. No one can speak and put in their views openly. Like Kaur who said Pakistan did not kill her father but it is the war which killed her father, baffled the people after which they started interpreting it differently. If people can’t speak even after obtaining freedom years ago then I think we have actually not got any freedom.” He added that the Abhiyan condemns this attack and supports Kaur.
Dr Oscar Rebello, who was present for the demonstration, said, “Freedom of speech is absolute, of course within constraints of society, but it is an absolute right within universities, students and youth. They have to debate, evolve and create a society which is different and better than the ones which we have inherited.”
