Fake news: Journalists lash out on social media

anuradha raman@raman_anuradha
Any government interference in news and its dissemination will be the death of news itself. Surprising that @smritiirani did not have the time to go through the NBA guidelines
barkha dutt @BDUTT
Something Trumpian in the air. This #FakeNews fight where the Media is the Enemy. While whats app forwards continue to send ‘postcards’ from an alternative reality or was it called ‘alternative facts’
Swati Chaturvedi @bainjal
Mrs Irani should think twice before playing the heavy censor. The guide lines she has issued are idiotic. To think the Bjp opposed the emergency!
Shekhar Gupta @ShekharGupta
Make no mistake: this is a breathtaking assault on mainstream media. It’s a moment like Rajiv Gandhi’s anti-defamation bill. All media shd bury their differences and resist this.
Nidhi Razdan@Nidhi
So basically it’s a gag order. Because anyone can accuse a journalist of “fake news” and get their accreditation taken away, without a probe. This is sheer harassment of the press, nothing more. And what about the fake news factories like Postcard News? They aren’t accredited.
Suhasini Haidar @suhasinih
With its order today, government makes it clear that it only wants to penalise those who are accredited, i.e “Mainstream media”. The I&B ministry’s “Fake News” threat doesn’t extend to those websites that openly flout journalistic ethics, some q often quoted by Ministers.
Smriti Z Irani @smritiirani
Committee comprising of senior officers, reps of PCI, NBA, IBF set up for regulations/ policy for digital broadcasting & News portals. Till such time the regulation is not implemented rules cannot be enforced for news portals by industry.
Suhasini Haidar @suhasinih
Replying to @smritiirani
But those who are penalised by today’s order, by definition, can only be those who are accredited. And they can be penalised on the basis of a “complaint”, not a final decision. I can’t imagine that’s fair, Ma’am.
Smriti Z Irani @smritiirani
Accreditation committee comprises of editors, journalists and reps of PCI & NBA; do you think they will victimise one of their own? Also a celebrated senior journalist such as your kind self should support ethical journalism & not ‘fake news’.
Sreenivasan Jain @SreenivasanJain
Your concern for fake news would be admirable were it not for 1/your own MP’s support to a fake news site like Postcard News. 2/if indeed the mandate is for self-regulation via PCI/NBA, why is govt passing orders?
Smriti Z Irani @smritiirani
I think Sir you need to study accreditation guidelines along with Code of Conduct as ascertained by PCI & NBA for journalists working with / aligned to them. And my earlier responses to @suhasinih ji re news portals & digital broadcasting.
Ahmed Patel @ahmedpatel
I appreciate the attempt to control fake news but few questions for my understanding:
1.What is guarantee that these rules will not be misused to harass honest reporters?
2.Who is going to decide what constitutes fake news ?
1/2
Smriti Z Irani@smritiirani
Glad to see you awake @ahmedpatel ji whether a News article / broadcast is fake or not will be determined by PCI & NBA; both of whom I’m sure you know are not controlled/ operated by GOI.
Vineet jain@vineetjaintimes
‘Fake news’ is ‘news’ that’s been created with CONSCIOUS knowledge that it’s not true. It is unacceptable. It’s a menace on social media. It is diff from inaccurate reporting, which can be corrected (with apologies if it hurts someone).Editors Guild, NBA should define fake news.
Smriti Z Irani @smritiirani
PIB Accreditation Guidelines asking Press Council of India & News Broadcasters Association to define & act against ‘fake news’ have generated debate. Several journalists & organisations have reached out giving positive suggestions regarding the same. 1/2
Smriti Z Irani @smritiirani
.@MIB_India is more than happy to engage with journalist body or organisation/s wanting to give suggestions so that together we can fight the menace of ‘fake news’ & uphold ethical journalism. Interested journalists and/or organisations may feel free to meet me at @MIB_India. 2/2
