MARGAO: When one passes the Bondorim-Sirlim junction and the monument of Our Lady of Fatima, Bondorim, Dramapur, one is reminded of the tragic fatal accident that had occurred almost a month ago.
On April 12, David Santan Simoes (28), resident of Goechebhatt, Ambelim, who was proceeding from Velim to Margao, was struck by a speeding vehicle and lost his life. The driver of the Scorpio jeep was proceeding to Balli from Margao, and while attempting to overtake another vehicle, collided into the deceased, who along with his scooter, was dragged for around 30 mts. The Scorpio then dashed into an electric pole before turning on its side.
The Scorpio jeep that robbed David of a full life and his dreams also smashed the front portion of the Our Lady of Fatima Cross. While that front portion of the monument is being repaired, the family and friends of the Velim youth are still recovering from the horrific incident. Whenever one passes, besides the usual sign of the cross, one can’t help but take a moment to pay their respects to the deceased and his family. People who had gathered at the site when the accident took place have said it is important that there are better safety regulations on the highway, which has seen many accidents.
“It was very shocking and what was worse was what happened to the boy and his family. It is hard to imagine what the family is going through, but our prayers are with them so they find the strength to cope with their loss,” said Tony D’Sa.
David was to get married, and police sources state that he had come to Margao to get his fiancée’s name written on the wedding ring, after which he met with an accident at Bondorim and died.
