MARGAO: Clarifying his stand on the St Xavier Chapel issue, Fatorda MLA, Vijai Sardesai has assured that the said structure will not be shifted.
The MLA said that he got a resolution passed at the MMC meeting to revoke the NOC to GSIDC.
The issue of the St Francis Xavier Chapel has been making rounds of the town for over 3 months now, which has drawn flak from the local MLA and Fatorda residents as well. “The Congress had taken funding from the Chowgule in the past,” the Fatorda MLA claimed, adding that he has no connection with the Chowgules.
“This stretch, which involves the chapel, had been acquired in the past. The road passes from just 3 metres from the Chowgule structure and the claim of me protecting them does not arise,” he said.
“For the first time in these 5 years, we have received a road widening contract estimated at the cost of Rs 18 crore and also Rs 2.7 crore tender for cultural avenue beautification of Ravindra Bhavan upto the Colva circle. Railing, pavers and other works will be carried out in the name of BRICS,” Vijai said.
“On the first death anniversary of late Dr Wilfred de Souza, on September 4, we will install his portrait in the Margao Municipal Council,” Vijai informed adding, “A resolution to this effect was also taken at the meeting”.
