The demolition of the shed was smooth as the fisherwomen were convinced to consent for the same by the local MLA.
The shed had been responsible for constant traffic jams and accidents for the last decade. The situation was compounded by the fact that a PWD office, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Chowgule service station, the Damodar Ling temple and the Our Lady of Rosary Church are situated close to the junction. Moreover, traffic moving towards Don Bosco College of Engineering traverses this junction.
Sardesai said that easing this bottleneck was a long-pending demand of Fatorda residents and was top on his manifesto. He admitted that there was some resistance to demolishing the shed, however the work was accomplished with the support of majority of the residents.
Allaying fears that shifting the fisherwomen shed would cause flooding, Sardesai said measures would be taken to prevent flooding during the ensuign monsoon season.
