FC Goa have to pay the price

Goa’s ISL franchise fined `50 lakh by AIFF for not attending post match presentation ceremony; Gaurs equipment manager banned for four games and issued with `1 lakh fine

PANJIM: Goa’s Indian Super League (ISL) outfit, FC Goa have been fined Rs 50 lakh by the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) Disciplinary Committee for their role in a fracas after the ISL final against eventual winners Chennaiyin FC, at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Margao on December 20, 2015.
After a fine run in the second edition of the tournament, in which Brazilian legend and FC Goa Head Coach Zico guided the hosts to the final, The Gaurs were penalised for not attending the post-match awards ceremony as they opted to stay away from the proceedings after the 3-2 defeat.
In addition, FC Goa’s equipment manager Rajesh Malgi has been banned for four games and issued with a Rs 1 lakh fine.
The AIFF Disciplinary Committee, which banned Mohan Bagan manager Sanjoy Sen recently, met at the AIFF House in Delhi to decide the fate of FC Goa, after serving them a show cause notice earlier in the year.
The incident in question revolves around the hotly contested Indian Super League Season 2 Final, a game which FC Goa were leading 2-1 going into the final minutes but lost 3-2 in injury time. The Goan contingent was involved in a fracas with match officials and the captain of Chennaiyin FC, Elano Blumer, after the game.
Consequently, they stayed away from the post-match proceedings, despite two of their players, Haokip and Joffre, winning awards. The owner of FC Goa also alleged match-fixing after the game, while also filing a police complaint against Blumer for assault, which resulted in the Brazilian being arrested.
However, the punishments might not end for FC Goa, as the Goan franchise also have to face a hearing from the Indian Super League committee, who might come down far harder on The Gaurs.
