BELGAUM: Distillation of Goan feni is expected to be severely hampered, with transporters from Belgaum, Kolhapur and Sindhudurg deciding to stop supply of cashews to Goa.
Wholesale Fish Merchants Association, Belgaum, and associations from Sindhudurg will also stop supply of dried fish to Goa.
It is interesting to note that though Goan feni is popular in and outside Goa, distilleries in Goa depend largely on cashew supply from Ajara, Chandgad, Bhudargad, western parts of Belgaum taluka, Sawantwadi, Mulgaon, Dodamarg, Satarda and Vengurla taluka in Sindhudurg.
Transporters have informed farmers not to pluck cashew apples for the next few days as transportation to Goa will be blocked.
Similarly, majority of fish meal and dried fish packaging units in Goa depend on supplies from Malvan, Vengurla, Deogad and Ratnagiri.
Belgaum Wholesale Fish Market Association President Girgol Rodrigues, who condemned the entry tax by Goa Government, told Herald that about 50 LCVs carrying dry fish to Goa will be affected by the entry tax. “Our organisation in Belgaum and Sindhudurg will support the blockade by transporters,” added Rodrigues.
