CORTALIM: There seems to be goods news for Mormugao taluka on the water front.
The taluka which witnessed frequent water shortages, especially during summer leading to agitations could well be a thing of the past.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday inaugurated the Rs 8 crore water filtration plant at Cuelim which would bring additional 10 MLD of water to Mormugao taluka and additional 7 MLD of water to Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd.
Parrikar said the dedicated pipeline from Davorlim to Verna IDC was laid in order to meet the water requirements in Mormugao taluka.
PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar said by 2015 he would ensure that the whole of Mormugao taluka receives the required water and also the water requirements to factories and PSU would be met.
He said a separate cell of 65 engineers had been formed to tackle the revenue loss and added that electrical meters would be installed.
In her speech, local MLA and Minister Alina Saldanha thanked the BJP government for augmenting the water supply to Mormugao which would specially benefit Cortalim, Sancoale villages in Mormugao taluka.
“I have witnessed many groups of people coming to my office with complaints of water shortages,” Saldanha said.
Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho recalled that he was consistently pursuing the matter with the government and PWD minister in particular and had many times chided the PWD minister in the Assembly on this. “Now my dreams have been fulfilled,” he said.
Vasco and Nuvem MLAs Carlos Almeida and Mickky Pacheco respectively also spoke. Earlier, PWD Chief Engineer Borkar gave the technical information on the filtration plant.
