MARGAO: Salcete finally has two block development officers to look after the 30 village panchayats in the taluka and it has been also allotted new office premises. But the provision for an extension officer village panchayat (EOVP) has not been made for nearly a year now with the charge being handled by a gram sevak-cum-panchayat secretary.
Sources in the know said the government is yet to fill up the vacant post of EOVP since the incumbent retired nearly a year ago. When the matter was brought to the attention of Salcete BDO-I, Manuel Barretto, he said a proposal has been forwarded to the Directorate of Panchayats for filling up the vacant post. He agreed that Salcete BDO office requires the services of minimum two EOVPs, given the size of the block having a total of 30 village panchayats. Curtorim Deputy Sarpanch J Santano Rodrigues told Herald that government should immediately deploy an EOVP to meet the requirements of the Salcete block. “It’s good that the government has finally deployed two BDOs for Salcete. The post of EOVP should also be filled up on a priority basis,” Rodrigues demanded.
