CANACONA: Canacona locals and tourists have questioned whether commercial establishments have permissions from Fire Services to operate their business and whether safety measures are in place for visitors to these premises.
Canacona fire station officer Francisco Mendes had directed commercial establishments in the taluka to take precautionary measures, but they seem to have ignored his advice as a shack at Patnem caught fire on Thursday; fire personnel rushed to the site immediately, but were unable to douse the flames as the fire tender could not access the structure. The fire was extinguished by foreign tourists with the help of labourers of the ill-fated shack, Cuba Hotel.
By that time, the owner had lost goods worth Rs 1 lakh. Shack manager Mohan suspects that the fire had been started by miscreants.
